Hi…I’m Sue Spire, from Constantia, a small town about 20 miles north of Syracuse, New York. I wouldn’t doubt that I’m the oldest contestant in the Battlefield. Let's just say I turned 60 a few birthdays ago.
I’ve just started my 26th year of working with stained glass, mostly full time. I lived in Australia for 12 of those years, where my husband and I owned a stained glass business. I designed and helped fabricate a multitude of large church and commercial windows as well as windows for private residences. I also taught classes, did repairs and restorations, and sold supplies.
Now that we’re back in the US, I mainly work out of my home studio, but I also do custom work and repairs for a local stained glass shop and teach specialty classes for them. I love all areas of glasswork so it is really difficult to choose just one thing that I like best. I do enjoy working with lead, and I’m currently writing an e-book on the lead technique. Teaching has always been my passion. I love working with my students and watching them become confident and creative. What a joy!
My hobbies are watercolor painting, gardening and playing the keyboard. We live out in the country with my oldest son, our dog and cat. My other son and his wife live in Australia and own a stained glass business there. I also have a daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
