The idea for using my pedestal for a carousel base came to me while I was picking the kids up from school the day I found out what the Theme Item would be.

The first obstacle I ran into was making the base taller so that I could insert a music box. I found that my woodworking abilities leave a lot to be desired. The pedestal is mosaic with mirror and a small amount of Spectrum pink. The music box plays, "The Wind Beneath My Wings."

The top is made with Kokomo Granite; pink, blue and purple streaked, with the bumpy side out. The edge is Spectrum Iridized pink, with the darker un-iridized side facing out. There are six 18mm faceted jewels and six gold plated ladies faces on the canopy of the carousel. I used an acrylic cabinet knob for the top to match the jewels.

The horses are lead castings from WC and measure 3"x 2-3/4" and are also gold plated. I used the tube that was supplied for the pole that the horses are attached to.

The overall measurements are 13 3/4" tall by 9 3/4" wide. The carousel sits on a beveled mirror.

This was a very challenging round, I look forward to seeing all the other entries. Good luck to all!

When I saw what we had to work with for this round I instantly thought of a weather vane. The horse was a natural choice for me since I have always liked horses. Assembling it so that it would be stable proved to be a challenge. I finally decided to use zinc came to attach the horse to the pole. I then drilled holes through the brass pole and inserted brass rods to put the letters on. I used Spectrum glass with interesting swirls for the horse.

"Dennstedt: Some nice features - the covered pedestal and music box. The proportions are a little awkward. Cobb: Nice idea. The wind is blowing in the horse's face. The horizontal bar under the horse is too prominent, and the base may be too narrow for the weight distribution above it."

"The use of mirror on the pedestal really made this piece. We also like the music box inside!"
