Skating At Kent Pond
This piece was inspired by special childhood memories of Kent Pond in
Wilton, CT. I had the idea in my head before I received the theme pieces so
imagine my surprise when a camel popped out! There aren't too many camels in
CT.
I began construction of the pond by molding and plastering the
"shoveled snow" embankments over a piece of white whispy glass. Once that
was completed, I created the trees to go around the edges. Though not the
biggest challenge but the most time consuming were the skaters. Each skater
was designed, cut and detailed to bring forth the illusion of skating. I
got the skaters vertical by soldering a thin rod on the back and then gluing
the rod into a large clear nugget.
The most challenging part of Battlefield:Glass was what to do with the camel
and butterfly wings. I finally decided that a great way to incorporate them
was to use them as the backing of benches set along the side of the pond for
the skaters. To finish it all off, I turned the orange jewel into a bright
shining star over Kent Pond.
This competition has truly tested by creative juice and I'm definitely ready
for Round 2. |
